[Mile End venues vs. local legislation] →
In another frustrating development for Mile End businesses, 9 year-old concert venue/restaurant Casa del Popolo is temporarily cancelling and moving its shows to other venues while it sorts out its licenses. Besides waiting on a bar liquor permit that would allow them to sell alcohol without requiring that customers order food, Casa is also trying to obtain the necessary concert license to put on...

[A Guide To Nuit Blanche 2009: How To Survive... →
From The Frozen Mammoth: Pro-tips: The best way to do Nuit Blanche is to be a dilettante: If something sucks, leave. If something’s great, stay for a while. Flit and float and you’ll find wonders - truly and seriously. This year, the metro runs all night. And it’s FREE. If you’re the type, we suggest you bring a flask. Dress warmly, for yr sprints from building-to-building, but keep in mind...

I hate it when my favourite shows have a team of...
It means that some episodes are so bang-on that I’m laughing for the entire episode. But then every few episodes I’ll run into one that just isn’t nearly as funny. It’s like a cousin who’s got your nose and your chin, but has this weird way of talking that doesn’t feel like family.

Year of the Earth Ox
willkippingperkins: So what’s in store for us in year the Earth Ox? According to the Halifax Shambhala Centre newsletter, who say they consulted several sources: “It seems the Year of the Earth Ox is one of stability and dependability. The Ox is a pragmatic, hard-working animal, while the Earth element is steady and firm. The pace is slow, but steady progress can be made if actions are in...

I just took off my sweater and a tshirt fell out.
It wasn’t attached to me by way of armholes or neckhole. It was just bundled up between two sweaters. This means: 1) I wear too many layers to notice a tshirt cyst in the mix. 2) The pile of clothes on my floor is becoming an issue. At this point, I can assemble a fairly good outfit by randomly grabbing a section of the pile and draping myself in whatever I happen to pull up. Soon I will...

– Marilis in an email to Sarah. Am i really that bad? This sounds like the premise for an intervention. I’m doing serious important work here!! Like diddling around with a bell and some pedals, for example. Also, I’m trying to be less stuck in my hood. I went downtown twice this past...

We are programmed to be interrupted. We get an adrenalin jolt when orienting to new stimuli: Our body actually rewards us for paying attention to the new. So in this very fast-paced world, it’s easy and tempting to always react to the new thing. But when we live in a reactive way, we minimize our capacity to pursue goals. - Digital Overload is Frying Our Brains, an interview with Maggie...

[Canadian Artists Outnumber Autoworkers, Earn 37%... →
Canadian artists remain among the most impoverished of the working poor, earning an average annual income of $22,700, about 37 per cent less than the rest of the Canadian workforce. And not all of that income is earned in the arts — the census doesn’t ask how much artists might make as waitresses and busboys, says Kelly Hill, president of Hill Strategies. [T]he number of Canadians...
