The incredible “sandwich loaf” at Sarah and Jon’s New Year’s Eve party. The recipe came from someone’s grandmother and called for a whole loaf of bread to be interspersed with layers of crab meat and chicken salad, iced with green cream cheese, and garnished with parsley, shaved carrot and ham roses, and sliced olives. So many kitsch points were won. It reminded me of ring-around-the-tuna, jello shrimp rings, and other 1950s hors d’oeuvres that served as the inspiration for a potluck at Sarah and Jon’s last year.
