Mile of String (1942)
Created for Andre Breton’s New York retrospective of Surrealist Art. Duchamp wound a mile of string through the space, and then even brought in a group of children to play in it, making it almost impossible for the guests to see the actual paintings.

This: I love.

Ahaha I wish I had known about this in high school. In grade eleven, my group of friends and our grade 12 counterparts somehow convinced the administration to let us start an “Art Club”, which required us to have our own classroom (?). We did a few token art projects—I remember something about easter eggs, masks, and tissue paper stained glass—but mostly it gave us a place to hang out on our periods off (or increasingly, when we cut class to hang out in the art club room). One day a bunch of art club members starting hanging string around the room in this exact manner, turning the room into an impenetrable web of string. They sat behind an overturned couch and watched people’s reactions as they would open the door to come in. Some people tried to navigate the maze through gymnastic behaviour and got yelled at for turning the wrong way and accidentally breaking a string. Eventually people got frustrated enough and I think Alan did a complete belly flop into the mass of string, pulling entangled furniture to the ground with him, and summoning teachers from the neighbouring classrooms who had heard the series of loud bangs and uproarious laughter that followed. Shortly after that the art club was dissolved and the room emptied, but my memories from that room are some of the best of my high school years.
